    #FreeEspilvio - Nicaraguan immigrant now!

Together we have helped stop deportations. Please help us free Espilvio Sanchez-Benavidez from detention who could be deported to his death.

Sign this petition calling on Representative Ileana Ros Lethinen and Representative Carlos Curbello to allow Giovanni to reunite with his family.

    Chris,

At the age of 21 Espilvio had witnessed the murder of two of his family members for opposing the government in Nicaragua. Espilvio Sanchez-Benavidez decided to migrate in 2013 to the United States from Nicaragua in order to save his life after he too was threatened.

Espilvio has made a home here and found a safe space where he met his now wife Wendy and step daughter Bella Sofia. He’s raised Bella as his own daughter. Bella has only come to know Espilvio as her father, and the future for her is now blurred as he’s a step closer to deportation.

Will you join us to demand for his release today so Espilvio can return home where he belongs and be with Bella Sofia and his wife Wendy?

Sign this petition calling on Representative Ileana Ros Lethinen and Representative Carlos Curbello to allow Giovanni to reunite with his family.

Thank you for taking action today.

    In solidarity,

Greisa and the rest of the team at United We Dream

Default Urge Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to Fund Deportation Defense for All

Urgent Call to Action! Urge Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to Fund Deportation Defense for All Not Just for Some!

    Immigrant Youth Coalition (IYC)

    Dear Chris,

Today, the Board of Supervisors is introducing a motion reducing the number of Los Angeles county immigrant community members that can get access to free legal representation if placed in deportation proceedings!

This motion is problematic for three main reasons:

This motion disproportionately affects low-income, LGBTQIA, women and black immigrant communities since they are most likely to be targeted by criminalization

Legal providers have expressed that this is a dysfunctional model and they will have to spend more than half of their time screening community members to find out they cannot represent them

Everyone deserves due process to better understand their rights and choices under immigration law. At the end of the day certain laws will dictate the outcome of the particular case.

We cannot let LA County discriminate against people who have convictions, especially given the systemic injustices within our criminal justice system. The carve-out will also make providing services more expensive and will end up helping fewer people. New York recently passed the first in the nation Universal Representation Program! We need LA to follow.

We urgently need your help opposing this motion with CALLS and SOCIAL MEDIA

At this point, we need to call ALL 5 of the Board of Supervisor offices and the Mayor expressing our strong opposition to this motion.

    Numbers:
    1) Sup. Solis: (213) 974-4111
    2) Sup. Ridley-Thomas: (213) 974-2222

    4) Sup. Hahn: (213) 974-4444
    5) Sup. Barger: (213) 974-5555
    6) Mayor Garcetti: (213) 978-0600

    Script:

Hello, my name is ______. My zip code is _______. I am calling to express my strong opposition to the LA Justice Fund Client Prioritization and Services motion, which the LA County Board of Supervisors will hear on Tuesday. The LA Justice Fund must not bar any group of people from getting a lawyer to defend them from deportation. This is about due process and fairness. Don't buy into Trump's framework, dividing people into "good" and "bad" immigrants. Please stand up for immigrants and ensure the LA Justice Fund provides services to ALL our community members.

Oppose Muslim Ban 2.0 & Muslim Laptop Ban

    Wednesday | April 12, 2017

    Dear Chris,

US Senate Bill 54 if passed will ban any government registry based on religion or national origin. The bill now has 10 Democratic Senators and one Independent Senator sponsoring it. But so far no Republican Senator.

The great pushback by Americans against the registry is paying off: San Francisco’s mayor signed the first preemptive law opposing Trump’s proposed registry, we hope many more cities will follow. Recently, the TV series Quantico took on Trump’s idea of a registry, and broke it down for viewers, questioning its premise and logic.

    Action Items

Add your name to the #OneAmerica registry

Support S.b-54: “Protect American Families Act”

While the database on Muslims has not been made a reality yet, Trump continues to stigmatize Islam and Muslims through other proposed measures. Trump’s second Executive Order restricting travel from Muslim nations was suspended swiftly by the Courts.

With the new Supreme Court appointee it will probably head for the Supreme Court.

Trump’s spokesman, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said on the March 16 that the administration would appeal the rulings “very soon.” It is more important than ever to remain vigilant against the registry and the ban.

Watch the #WeBelongTogether Kids Caravan live from DC right now!

    We Belong Together

    Dear Chris,

It’s been an amazing few days for Charlene, Jasmine, Leah, William, Thomas, and all the youth on the #WeBelongTogether Kids Caravan!

Watch live as they end their journey by standing up for each other in front of the White House. After days on the road, all the kids are ready to show Trump that their bonds are unbreakable and that no matter what, #WeBelongTogether!

On Monday, Charlene, a 16 year old Afro-latina, spoke at her first press conference and gave Mayor Gimenez an “F” for failing to protect immigrant families. On Tuesday the kids painted banners, danced and went on a tour of Atlanta’s West End with new friends to learn about their movement roots and the history of the black freedom struggle. On Wednesday they stood up for immigrant families in North Carolina.

Now that they’re in DC, Jasmine wants Trump to know that no matter what, “we are not afraid. We are going to stand up for our friends and families!” Tune in live as the kids deliver their messages of power and unity at Trump’s door.

Next week it’s your turn to show elected leaders in your community that kids’ bonds are stronger than hate and that no matter what, #WeBelongTogether. Stay tuned for updates on local actions and for more information about how you can plan an event near you.

    — With love and inspiration, Andrea, on behalf of all the Kids Caravan leaders

Trump plans detention force and network of camps for immigrants

    By Eric London

    14 April 2017

The Trump administration is advancing plans to create a national force of paramilitary guards and officials aimed at deporting millions of undocumented people from the United States. According to the Washington Post, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is planning on jailing tens of thousands more immigrants in the coming period, hiring thousands of agents, as well as the construction of a wall between the US and Mexico.

According to an internal DHS memo acquired by the Post, the government is expanding the number of detention beds by 33,000, including some for “unaccompanied minors,” in other words, children held in prison.

These facilities will include five private, for-profit prisons and two government facilities. The total number of immigrants imprisoned on a daily basis will rise to around 70,000—approaching the number of Japanese-Americans interned by the Roosevelt administration during World War II.

Mexican children wave as construction workers expand the border wall

The memo also explains that “progress” has been made and that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is “taking all appropriate action to immediately plan, design, and construct a physical wall” along the border. One contractor proposed to build a wall with a moat filled with nuclear waste that immigrants would fall into if they attempted to cross.

DHS is also dredging up the most backward and fascistic elements to hire 5,000 new guards and agents who will serve as modern-day slave catchers. The memo announces that the agency has eliminated the most basic physical and mental fitness requirements for applicants and has dropped the requirement that applicants must pass a polygraph test.

To combat widespread hostility to immigration raids, DHS will engage in propaganda to “further improve brand awareness and convey the importance and scope of our mission within the public sphere.” To do so, DHS is targeting young people: “We will also continue to focus on increasing our digital and social media presence to reach the millennial generation; [and] expand our outreach at high schools, colleges and universities.”

The new memo comes after DHS announced it has hired two fascistic white nationalists, John Feere of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) and Julie Kirchner of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), to serve as policy advisers to ICE and CBP, respectfully. The fact that CIS and FAIR are now helping direct the government’s immigration policy is a warning of even more brutal treatment to come.

The New York Times reported yesterday that the Trump administration is also seeking to eliminate even the minimal requirements for services at immigrant detention centers. The administration is considering dropping translation services for immigrants, eliminating rules that detainee requests for medical attention be granted within 24 hours, and closing a bureau responsible for overseeing conditions for protecting immigrant women from sexual assault.

Immigrant detention centers are already hellish places, often located in isolated areas, where immigrants are fed rotten food, barred from seeing their attorneys, and housed with violent non-immigrant criminals. Many immigrants are housed in county jails. One Ohio police sheriff told the Times, “Jail is jail … we don’t put chocolates on the pillows.”

Two immigrants jailed at the West Texas Detention Facility

Private prisons house roughly 65 percent of detained immigrants, and this figure is likely to rise when the new expansion is carried out. The Democratic and Republican parties established a “detention bed quota” whereby the government is required to fill prisons with immigrants, producing windfall profits for privately-run facilities whose corporate executives donate heavily to both parties.

This massive expansion of the internment camp system for immigrant detention is taking place with the tacit approval of the Democratic Party, which has maintained an almost complete silence on Trump’s attack on immigrants in recent weeks. The Democratic Party has instead attacked Trump from the right, demanding that he prosecute the ruling class’s war drive against Russia in Syria while also threatening to attack North Korea.

Speaking at an event in Brooklyn, New York Wednesday, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said that Trump’s immigration program is “terrible for America because these are people who work and you’re taking people’s breadwinners away, you’re taking people away who businesses need. That’s why they’re here. And so we’ll do everything we can to stop that.”

Aside from Schumer’s cynical declaration that he “defends” immigrants because corporations need to exploit cheap labor, his claim that Democrats will oppose Trump’s immigration programs is a lie.

Schumer and the vast majority of Democratic senators showered DHS, ICE, and CBP with money during last year’s appropriations bill, which “provides appropriation for … Border Security Fencing, Infrastructure, and Technology,” as well as “construction and facilities management.”

Democrats Schumer, Booker, Durbin, Feinstein, Franken, Gillibrand, Kaine, Klobuchar, Leahy, Reid, and many more agreed to pay the “salaries and expenses” of every immigration officer and border patrol agent. Each time an immigrant is deported, the Democratic Party has effectively signed their next check.

Widespread demonstrations have taken place against Trump’s immigration policies, and polls show large majorities oppose the construction of a border wall. Ninety percent of Americans support granting citizenship to immigrants who have lived in the US for several years. Last week, roughly 30,000 people demonstrated in Dallas, Texas to defend the rights of immigrants.

Democratic politicians spoke at the rally, including former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro, who as HUD Secretary sold 98 percent of long-delinquent mortgages to Wall Street speculators at sweetheart rates through the Distressed Asset Stabilization Program.

Democratic state legislator Roberto Alonzo told the crowd to vote for Democrats: “The 2006 march and the movement around that is what turned Dallas County blue in 2008. First we march, then we govern.”

Alonzo failed to mention that when the Democrats governed under Obama, they deported 2.7 million undocumented people and set the stage for Trump’s expanded deportation program.

    Default Chicago must expand Sanctuary

    Chicago must expand Sanctuary

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago City Council must expand Sanctuary City.

It's time for Chicago to stop doing Trump's dirty work.

    TAKE ACTION!

    Chris,

Chicago is not a Sanctuary city. This month it is expected that Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago City Council will have two important decisions to make to expand Sanctuary in the city. Chicago has a potential amendment to a city ordinance called Welcoming City that aims to expand protections for immigrants. And another potential ordinance that will limit the power and notorious relationship between the Fraternal Order of Police and Chicago police department by setting crucial guidelines that will decrease police violence and hold police accountable. These changes would be major steps in creating policies that will reform Chicago’s police department and local government.

Right after Trump took office, Mayor Rahm Emanuel publicly announced that Chicago would remain a Sanctuary City.1 Yet, weeks later ICE officials rounded up hundreds of people in series of raids in Chicago and across the country -- taking people out their homes, workplaces, schools and away from their loved ones. Many Black people continue to be inflicted with violence by the hands of police. Those words echoed by Mayor Emanuel were empty promises.

Tell Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago City Council must expand Sanctuary protections for all people of Chicago by passing these important city ordinances.

Chicago has a long and damaging history of state violence that deeply impacts Black people’s lives and well-being. We still remember the tragic and horrific killing of teenager Laquan McDonald by a police officer. This prompted a federal investigation by the Justice Department and one of the largest community mobilization efforts to remove then state attorney Anita Alvarez from office for her failure to hold the police accountable at the time. Yet, the Chicago police still remain unchecked and still harms Black people.

Elected leaders have a responsibility to the communities they represent. A city cannot be Sanctuary if Black and Brown people are harassed and killed by police more frequently than anyone else. The police do not deserve all the power and control -- it's the people who deserve safety first. Sanctuary must be expanded to fully protect all marginalized communities. The Welcoming City ordinance and the Fraternal Order of Police resolution must be approved by Mayor Emanuel and the Chicago City Council. Both of these measures will provide a transformative step in protecting and improving the lives of all Chicago residents by redefining and expanding Sanctuary city.

Demand Mayor Emanuel and the Chicago City Council move forward with expanding protections for immigrants and ending the power of the Fraternal Police Union. Sign the petition.

The Trump Administration has the sole intent on attacking and silencing Black and Brown communities through its “Law and Order” agenda. Just days after the inauguration, Trump signed a series of vicious executive orders that target and disrupt the lives of immigrants -- from banning Muslim immigrants and refugees from traveling to the U.S. to emboldening more power to local law enforcement and ICE agents. One includes the elimination of federal funding to cities that are declared Sanctuary. In the aftermath, all across the country, many immigrants became prime targets and once again lived in fear. And just last month, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Justice Department would start to cut DOJ contracts to cities that are Sanctuary.

Then Trump pushed further and signed three specific executive orders that bolster the power and control of law enforcement. Each of these executive orders included the expansion of law enforcement, monitoring and surveilling activists within the Black Lives Matter movement, re-igniting the “War on Drugs” that includes increasing the funding for military equipment for local police departments. ALL of these measures are just the beginning. In Chicago and cities across the country, too many times we’ve seen the dismantling of our progress and civil rights. It’s time for cities to stop doing Trump’s dirty work, it’s time to resist.

    Sign the petition.

Default 100 Disruptions: Surveillance of immigrants

    100 Disruptions: Surveillance of immigrants

    freepress.net

    Chris,

Social media is where we express ourselves freely, right? Not so much if you’re an immigrant — and especially not if you’re undocumented.

Under the Trump administration, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expanded the use of social-media surveillance to justify arresting, detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants all over the country, making the internet a pretty dangerous place.1

Local police as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are monitoring thousands of social-media accounts, poring through personal posts for anything they can use1 — and trampling all over basic human rights.

Today’s ask is to read and share the community advisory from the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, which outlines these tactics and provides valuable tips for safety and security. Pass this guidance along to anyone who may be vulnerable, as well as those who provide services and support.

Let’s work together to protect the dignity of immigrants while fighting the surveillance state in all its forms.

Thanks for all that you do—

Trump seeks to restrict visas used by high-tech companies

    APRIL 18, 2017, 7:49 A.M.

Trump to take first step toward restricting visas used by tech industry

    Michael A. Memoli

President Trump on Tuesday will take what the White House is calling a “transitional step” toward a revamped immigration system, ordering a review of a visa program meant to attract skilled immigrant labor that administration officials say has been abused to the detriment of American workers.

An executive order Trump is scheduled to sign during a visit to a Wisconsin manufacturer will direct federal agencies to review the H-1B visa program, which is widely used by the tech industry to bring workers in from other countries.

The White House argues that the program has been “abused to the point of being rendered … inoperative,” as an official told reporters Monday, bringing in workers for positions where they earn less than the industry average paid to American workers. That's a criticism that has also been widely made by outside analysts.

A senior administration official, briefing reporters Monday on the condition of anonymity ahead of the president’s event, said the goal of the review would be to shift the process for awarding H1-B visas to put a priority on higher-skilled and higher-paid workers, making it more difficult to use it to replace American workers.

Trump's plan, which also directs a separate review of government purchasing requirements, is consistent with the “Buy American, Hire American” credo that was a staple of his campaign, featured prominently in his inaugural address and outlined in his address to Congress in February.

“This is a transitional step to get toward a more skills-based and merit-based immigration system,” the official said.

The executive order is the latest in a series of steps the administration has already taken on H-1B visas. Under guidance issued earlier this month by the Department of Homeland Security, companies seeking to sponsor computer programmers for a guest visa would need to take additional steps to verify the tasks performed qualify as a “specialty occupation.”

    Default BREAKING NEWS: #JusticeForJuan

    BREAKING NEWS: #JusticeForJuan

    Chris,

The Trump administration has chosen to deport a DACA recipient. This is despite the fact that Trump promised he wouldn't target DACA recipients.

We must stand up against Donald Trump's ICE AND CBP thugs who are doing this to our community. If Juan wasn’t safe, anyone can be next.

Our response to Juan's deportation needs to be immediate and powerful. This deportation force is unacceptable and against our vision for our country. This is a moment for our #HereToStay network to shine. We must take action to demand Members of Congress reject funding for Trump's agenda, be bold by demanding that Juan Manuel is brought home, and be proud. And we need to do it immediately.

Sign this petition to demand Department Homeland Secretary John Kelly bring back Juan from Mexico

On February 17, Juan Manuel Montes was walking to a taxi stand in his hometown in California when he was approached by border officials and asked for his papers. Though Juan is authorized to live and work in America through the DACA program, he was deported to Mexico just hours later.

Juan was brought to the United States by his family when he was 9 years old. He had graduated from high school and was working while finishing community college at the time he was picked up. He was nearly finished with his welding degree.

DACA recipients like Juan and myself come forward, file paperwork, receive background checks, and pay fees. In exchange, we receive work authorization and a promise that the federal government will not deport us. But we know DACA recipients have been wrongfully detained by ICE. And now, for the first time, a DACA recipient has been deported. We need to make sure the Trump administration and the entire country hear us:

Tell Secretary John Kelly: Bring DACA-Recipient Juan Back from Mexico!

We delivered over 50,000 petitions to Secretary Kelly to demand Dany and Daniel’s release, and now they are both free. Our movement is making a difference. Now it’s time to put our power behind Juan.

Adrian and the rest of the team at United We Dream

P.S. Join us tonight at 8pm ET on Facebook Live to learn about how you can take action on the ground to bring back Juan and stop future detentions and deportations from happening https://www.facebook.com/unitedwedream
