Adapted from Greg and Lucy Malouf's 'Moorish' recipe book due to my lack of Turkish delight.
Ingredients:
4 slices of stale white bread
3 eggs
300mls fresh cream
150mls milk
75g butter
150g of the best chocolate you can get (I used Lindt 70%)
sugar (tbh I didn't measure this- I just tasted. I'd estimate about a third of a cup)
3 tablespoons hazelnut meal
A handful of whole hazelnuts, toasted
Method:
Cut the bread into 2cm cubes and place into a baking dish.
In a double boiler place the chocolate (broken into pieces), butter, sugar, milk and cream. Heat slowly until everything is melted and the sugar is dissolved. Stir to combine. Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly.
In a separate bowl whisk the eggs lightly.
Add the eggs to the chocolate mixture, whisking madly so you don't end up with scrambled eggs. It should resemble a chocolate custard when you're done.
Add the hazelnut meal and whole nuts.
Pour the whole lot over the bread, making sure all the bread is covered.
Cover the dish with clingwrap and refrigerate for a couple of hours.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. Bake for 30-35 mins.
It's very, very rich, so I'd serve it with cream or ice cream. And it's great cold the next day. <3
