Unfortunately in the phils pretty much all bread you can buy has heaps of sugar in it, so it tastes ultra sweet and kills the flavour of pretty much everything I like to use bread for. So, even though it seems mundane, I wish I could get loaves of bread with no sugar!

Plain bread isn't hard to make yourself if you know how. Naan bread is different though cause you need a tandoori oven.


You can't get decent donner kebabs where i live.

I lived in Manchester for 6 years and in my experience they do the best ones there. (im guessing Birmingham is ahead since they're the curry capital of the uk but meh, i've never been). They can't get the meat or the naan bread right round here. Or the pickled chillies.



I have a thing for pickled green chillies now cause of the time i spent there.

Croq Monsieur and Croq Madame. They are two very good types of sandwhiches that I had when I was in Paris. I'm not sure really what was in them, but they were delicious! (I know the Croq Madame had an egg on it.)

They use naan for kebabs in the UK? Random. Here most of the kebab places are Turkish or Greek (well, the Greeks call them souvlaki, buit same thing...) style.

I can't find porcini mushrooms at a reasonable price here. Boo! And soda bread. I also miss Marks and Spencer lunches. :P They do the ultimate comfort food.

As an aside, growing up in South Africa, we used to be able to grow a lot of our food. I really miss that. My gran grew lychees, pawpaw, corn, tomatoes, bananas, mangoes and heaps more stuff.

I miss döner kebabs as they're sold in eastern Switzerland/France (baguette, lamb, lettuce, onion, tomato, cucumber, sauce blanche, harissa), even though I can't eat the meat anymore. You just can't get them here, all you can find are gyros and the sauce isn't the same. I also miss liquor-filled chocolates.

Feijoas, and kinder buenos. And crab soup.

Peanut and Coconut Donuts. Either the "sticks" or regular round donuts. Krispy Kreeme sucks - it's for people who don't know what a good donut ever tasted like...tastes like fried greesy shit...either eat it fresh out of the oil or forget it...

Haven't found malasadas yet, altho I heard they're available here somewhere.

I miss Hawaii...

I live in the Netherlands, and I really miss the salt & vinegar crisps from the other shore. At least the posh expensive brands now do have a balsamic vinegar version, which is something. A couple of years ago, they suddenly started selling a lot more flavours at supermarkets, but most of them are gone again now. I guess people didn't like them.

While we're on the subject of England, I also hate the absence of fish & chips here. There is this fish stall at the market here that supposedly sells it, but it's really just 'kibbeling', which is a Dutch snack of battered and fried cod. Under the name "fish & chips", they sell it with regular French fries and garlic sauce or mayonnaise. Heresy.

Belgian beer of all kinds is easy to get in the supermarket, but even in my favourite liquor store, the selections from England, Germany and the Czech Republic are very limited and inconsistent.

Licorice anything. I went to Europe about two weeks ago and was astounded by how much licorice shit they have there-- WHY don't we have that much licorice candy here?! It's fucking delicious. I have to go all the way to British import stores to get fancy licorice candies.
