Most of the ones I have seen are by academics or Trotskyists who demonize Stalin. Is there any good unbiased history of the Russian revolution online or in book format?

Well, a good read to start with is "Ten Days that Shooke the World" by John Reed, an American socialist who was in Russia during the time the revolution happened and describes the days before and the days of the revolution in a very clear, interesting and exciting way. Sadly he never published the planned next episode describing the Civil War but since you look for a report about the Revolution this book should be useful, I can recommend the book, enjoyed it very much.

Ten Days is pretty much the best account of the Revolution in my opinion, essential reading for any Marxist-Leninist. Stalin wrote a short, albeit very interesting piece on the Revolution, worth a look.
