Most web sites does this. It is for statistical purposes, although it sets off paranoia in the selected few.

I would imagine that that is probably an urban legend.

Sure they undoubtably record the referring URL and might even check your cookie history, a lot of sites do this. But do you really think that they're looking through it?

It seems unlikely that, one, they'd really care, and two, that they'd risk the publicity for such nebulous gains.

In fact, the sites that are probably going through your history the most are the commercial sites. Google and Yahoo and Amazon... they're the ones that care of about web-use and "e-commerce".
