My uncle Jebbie, was the most sensible member of my family. He was a railroad boy for the Louisville Nashville railroad. At one time he offered to get me on with the L&N., but I couldn't do it because I was still in the University and it was the Viet Nam war period, and they would have drafted my ass the minute I dropped out of school., so I didn't get the chance to work for the L&N.
I cant help but think what my life would have been like if I had a chance to go into a training program, drive one of those big trains across country. Then they didn't have any trains that went all the way across country, but they had a few of them I suspect. There was a train that began in Cinncinati, and you had to change trains in CInncinati to go on to New York, then you went on to Harrisburg to Philadelphia then to New York City.
The US once had a decent train system. The AMtrack took over and that was a disaster. Now AMtrack has banned smoking on all its trains, which cuts out about 80% of its customers, so soon Amtrack will go out of business, damn fuckers. What smokers will do is rent a car and drive how long it takes. Take a nice easy trip across country. Its not hard, I drove from New Orleans to San Fransico in about 4 and a half days, stayed in motels, took it easy, I smoked all the way. Screw Amtrak. It had a pretty decent ? (undistiquishable) a lot of good moral, to Broadway limited, or New York City to Chicago. It had a lot of good moral on the Sunset limited from Los Angeles to New Orleans, and the Coach Starlight to Los Angeles to Seattle. The were good trains. There was a chance AmTrak could have amounted to something, but they didnt give a fuck, Dmbasses. As far the airlines are concerned, they can go fuck. They have already had what the FAA calls, "Incidences", fucked up airlines, all of them with mid-air collisions, or almost landing catastrophies, so screw them.
Don't you know it will take a socialist American to bring the train system back to where they are suppose to be.

Hey, sorry for the late response here.
It was a good history of the train-system but I disagree that the reason of the degeneration of the train-system has to do primarily with the banning of smoking.
People are not allowed to smoke in planes either, but it is the first choice of travel for many Americans, or for example here in the Netherlands they are not allowed to smoke in trains either but it is still a very popular means of transportation.
I think that it has more to do with the take-over of Amtrack and the rise in prices. It's probably cheaper, faster and easier to travel by plane in the US, so a lot of people go for that instead of bothering with trains.
It's a shame really, the train is a pretty good public transportation system and it also has a lot less pollution than planes do.Posted 24th July 2008 at 15:29 by Led Zeppelin

I don't think he was arguing that it was a primary cause, merely a contributing factor - doubtless most of the 80% of Amtrak customers that smoked decided to suck it up, but it would not surprise me if the banning of smoking contributed to smokers choosing other methods of transport.Quote:Originally Posted by Led ZeppelinIt was a good history of the train-system but I disagree that the reason of the degeneration of the train-system has to do primarily with the banning of smoking.Posted 14th October 2008 at 04:57 by ÑóẊîöʼn
