Views from the hemispheric South, on the struggle of workers and the poor, from around the world, with a very few pieces I wrote myself.
Argentina: World Marijuana March
[From the Fracción Trotskista http://www.ft-ci.org/?lang=en – Unofficial translation]
La Verdad Obrera / La Verdad Obrera Nº 473 / DEMOCRATIC FREEDOMS
SATURDAY, MAY 5
World Marijuana March
12 noon: Gathering at the Plaza de Mayo – 3 p.m. March to Congress
The World Marijuana March has been held since 1999 in more than 200 cities of the world, and it demands a change in policy that will put an end to arrests of the users and the growers of cannabis.
After 23 years of repressive policies against drug users, the only thing that has been achieved is the annual arrest of more than 12,000 people, while a powerful criminal drug trafficking network has developed, with connections to repressive forces and political power. In Argentina, more than 20 cities have mobilized in favor of decriminalizing possession of drugs and cannabis growing.
The demands of the convenors:
• An immediate end to arrests and criminal proceedings against users for possession of drugs.
• Public, universal and free medical attention for health problems associated with drug use, guaranteed by law, based on policies of harm reduction.
From the PTS Youth, we are mobilizing to demand no more persecution of young people; in addition to these demands, we struggle for legalization of all drugs.
